Seamus Heaney
On my way to the reading of the Nobel prize winner, Irish poet Seamus Heaney, I had a curious experience. I was trying to get to Strahov Monastery and got stuck in a horrific traffic jam at Újezd. On top of that I was late... Then a fortunate idea struck me: I will try to catch the funicular! A while later I am ascending Petřín hill, savoring the Prague panorama and thinking I am nuts, I am the only person to choose that way to such a reading. In the end, however, I came there quite early.
For me, Seamus is a legendary poet. No wonder there was a large crowed around him and it was a small miracle when we happened to stand alone, the crowd swarming around us... And Seamus emitted a very special, almost unearthly sense of tranquility... The poet's presence invoked in my mind the vision of a quietly running brook in which a fair willow's branches trail their hair...
